National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
September 30, 2021
The Government of Canada recently passed legislation declaring September 30th a federal statutory holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
On September 30, 2021, the Township of Greater Madawaska will observe the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day provides an opportunity for us to recognize and commemorate the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools. It is also a day to honour and remember the survivors, their families, and communities who continue to bear witness to these tragedies.
In observation of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Township will also raise an Orange Flag for the week beginning September 27, 2021.
The Township Office and Public Works Department will be closed September 30, 2021.
It is our hope that the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation will present an opportunity for Township of Greater Madawaska staff and others in the community to remember and recognize the legacy of residential schools through quiet reflection, engaged learning, and participation in community events.
